14:57 EDT Chipotle dips after signaling continued high costs to win back consumers - Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) fell Tuesday after the restaurant chain "clarified" its second quarter outlook, appearing to confirm that costs related to food, marketing, and promotion will remain elevated as it seeks to regain consumer trust following its 2015 food scares. CHIPOTLE WARNS ON COSTS: In a regulatory filing after Monday's close, Chipotle "clarified" its financial outlook in connection with an investor meeting, saying that "for Q2, we continue to expect food costs to be approximately 34.2% of sales, and marketing and promotion costs to be up approximately 20-30 basis points versus Q1 to 3.6%-3.7% of sales. As a result, we expect other operating costs as a percentage of sales for Q2 to be at or slightly higher than reported for Q1. For the full year, we continue to expect comparable restaurant sales increases in the high single digits." PIPER MAKES ONLY MINOR TWEAKS: Piper Jaffray's Nicole Regan highlighted that the news follows a "solid" Q1 report and says the Q2 guidance update necessitates only "relatively minor" tweaks to her quarterly models. The analyst maintains her earnings predictions for both 2017 and 2018, adding that the firm's latest checks generally reflect the consensus opinion that trends are now "headed in the right direction," likely helped by Chipotle's TV campaign. Regan reiterated an Overweight rating and $530 target on the stock while noting that its next catalyst is "stringing together a series of steady quarterly improvements." MAXIM PREFERS DEEPER PULLBACK: While keeping a Hold rating and $440 target on Chipotle, Maxim's Stephen Anderson cut his Q2 profit estimate to $2.62 from $2.87 per share on the company's likely higher costs, adding that he had previously expected food expenses to improve as promotional activity and commodity prices eased. The analyst models double-digit comparable sales growth for the quarter while warning of impacts from the Easter holiday shift and Chipotle's recently-disclosed data breach, saying he still prefers to wait for a "deeper pullback" before recommending the stock. DEUTSCHE HIGHLIGHTS MARGIN CONCERNS: Writing that margin recovery "remains under pressure," Deutsche Bank analyst Brett Levy says food, marketing, and other operating costs continue to form an "apparent drag on restaurant-level profits." Levy lowered his second quarter EPS view by 20c to $2.04 and highlighted that management indicated sequential expense pressures are expected to persist and could near 100 basis points of additional costs versus the prior consensus forecast for restaurant-level margins. The analyst keeps a Sell rating on the shares, arguing that Chipotle "faces an uphill battle" to regain lost sales while lifting margins PRICE ACTION: Dropping sharply upon market open, shares of Chipotle remain down 6.7% to $428.31 in late day trading.

11:29 EDT Before the Move: Goldman sees Vivint as top target when M&A heats up - As the potential for increased mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. solar space ramps up, Goldman Sachs analyst Brian Lee views Vivint Solar (VSLR) as a main target for possible deals citing restructuring potential in the residential solar business. "M&A RIPENING": Lee said the transaction pipeline in the U.S. solar sector appears to be picking up, a trend he views as likely to continue, and estimated that approximately $3B of announced solar deals could be on track to close in the second half of 2017. The emergence of contracted cash-flow based models, the restructuring of business models, low-cost financing and declines in solar equity prices are increasing the likelihood of mergers and acquisitions, the analyst wrote. RANK 1: Based on the potential for increased M&A, Lee upgraded Vivint to Buy from Neutral and raised his price target for the shares to $6 from $3.50. Lee assigned Vivint Goldman's highest M&A rank of 1, representing a 30% to 50% probability of a deal, up from 3, as he sees increased restructuring potential in the residential solar business. He added the company's renewed financing breadth, concentrated equity ownership and aggressive shift to cash/loan volumes strengthens its turn-around potential and position as an M&A target. Lee said management has previously said it is open to a sale and Goldman's hypothetical sensitivity analysis suggests potential mid-teens returns for an acquirer if mix shift continues. OTHER RANK INCREASES: Lee also assigned a rank of 1 to 8point3 Energy (CAFD), up from 4, saying while the firm has not viewed the company as an attractive acquisition candidate due to high leverage and its dual-parent ownership structure, an announcement by First Solar (FSLR) and SunPower (SPWR) to explore strategic alternatives could result in a sale of the company. He added risk-reward for potential buyers is attractive at current equity prices. Lee kept a Buy rating on the name and raised his price target to $16 to $15. In addition, he notes Sunrun (RUN) is trading below tangible book value following underperformance but Goldman's hypothetical sensitivity analysis suggests potential returns above 15% for an acquirer if mix shift persists. Lee ranks the company at a 2, up from a 3, reiterates a Buy rating and raises his price target to $10 from $9. PRICE ACTION: In morning trading, Vivint rose 19% to $5.18, 8point3 Energy increased 9% to $13.82, and Sunrun rose 8.3% to $6.34. 11:07 EDT Atlantic Equities favorable on airlines' outlook, likes Delta, United best - Research firm Atlantic Equities started coverage of the airlines sector with a favorable outlook. The firm says that it's "encouraged" by the sector's ability to maintain its profitability above the peak levels of prior cycles. Atlantic Equities started coverage of Delta (DAL) and United Continental (UAL) with Overweight ratings, but it initiated coverage of American Airlines (AAL) with an Underweight, its equivalent of a sell rating. The firm started coverage of Southwest (LUV) with a Neutral rating. SECTOR: Airlines are benefiting from several positive macro trends, including "moderating capacity additions," an improving economy, and the launch of "branded fares," wrote Atlantic Equities analyst Lindsay Bettiol. As a result of these factors, the outlook for the sector's unit revenues has improved, according to the analyst, who noted that the industry's revenue per available seat mile increased last quarter for the first time in over two years. Meanwhile, most of the companies in the sector have already implemented price increases, and fuel prices are falling, so "cost pressures appear subdued," according to Bettiol. Consequently, the sector's margins should rise in the second half of this year and into fiscal 2018, she predicted. DELTA: The airline has "the correct balance" of exposure to improving margins and protection from any economic weakness, the analyst stated. Additionally, Delta has a "dominant position at its major hubs" and its free cash flow generation is above the sector average, according to the analyst, who placed a $68 price target on the stock. UNITED CONTINENTAL: The airline has the greatest operating leverage in the sector, making its results more likely to improve than Delta, but also making it riskier than the latter company, according to Bettiol. However, since the sector's dynamics look positive, United Continental's risk/reward ratio is also favorable, she believes. The analyst set a $100 price target on the shares. AMERICAN AIRLINES: Although American Airlines has some positive attributes, United Continental offers the same positive catalysts at lower risk, since its financial leverage is much lower than that of American, according to Bettiol. The analyst set a $56 price target on American. PRICE ACTION: In morning trading, United Continental slid 0.6% to $78.19, Delta fell 0.8% to $52.12, and American dropped 2% to $48.68.

Hot Stocks

10:24 EDT Nvidia advances after Pacific Crest upgrade on cryptocurrency demand - The shares of Nvidia (NVDA) are gaining ground after research firm Pacific Crest upgraded the stock to Sector Weight from Underweight, its equivalent of a sell rating. The company's gaming business should be boosted by strong demand for cryptocurrency mining tools, the firm stated. STRONG CRYTOCURRENCY DEMAND: After conducting supply chain checks in Asia, Pacific Crest analyst Michael McConnell believes that strong demand for Nvidia's graphic processing units for use in cryptocurrency mining "has rapidly depleted" the inventory in Nvidia's channels. As a result, the analyst is less worried about the growth of the company's gaming business for the rest of fiscal 2018. In the wake of the firm's checks, McConnell is also less concerned about the record days of inventory and "elevated" days of sale outstanding that he says the company is facing. BEARISH NOTE: On June 15, Wells Fargo issued a bearish note on Nvidia. According to the firm, Nvidia's accelerators "are optimized for some specific types of applications" i.e. graphics or image processing, leaving the door open for processors that are stronger in other areas. Wells expects several different classes of datacenter accelerators to eventually emerge, creating more competition for Nvidia. The firm kept an Underperform rating on the stock. PRICE ACTION: In morning trading, Nvidia rose 1.5% to $159.65. Year-to-date, the stock is up nearly 50%.

09:39 EDT Huber takes stake in Teekay Tankers, will vote against pending acquisition - Huber Capital Management reported a 10.3% stake in Teekay Tankers and says it intends to vote against the pending acquisition of Tanker Investments. "The pending transaction requires approval by a majority of Class A Shareholders to authorize the issuance of additional Class A shares above TNK's currently authorized limit. Our decision to vote against the transaction has been influenced by what we believe to be the continued sub-optimal capital deployment strategy of paying as much or more than any other potential buyer for assets controlled by or related to TNK's parent company Teekay Corporation," Huber wrote in a statement. It added, "The control nature of Teekay Tankers' dual share class structure prevents Class A holders from fully exercising their pro rata share on proxy decisions, however, this is our last best chance to convince the board to act in our best interest and not in what we believe to be the best interest of other Teekay Corporation related parties. Poor share price performance has gone hand in hand with poor capital allocation at Teekay Tankers. Since the fourth quarter 2015 Teekay Tankers has issued over 11 million shares of Class A Equity through a Continuous Offering Program and 13.8 Million of super voting Class B Shares for an acquisition of a related party entity. Now TNK is proposing the issuance of an additional 88.9 million Class A Shares for the TIL transaction."

09:02 EDT Qualcomm makes strategic investment in Amionx - Amionx and Qualcomm announced Qualcomm's strategic investment in Amionx. As part of its investment, Qualcomm President Derek Aberle will join the board of directors of Amionx. Amionx has pioneered and patented a transformative technology called Safe Core that acts like a circuit-breaker to prevent lithium-ion batteries from being the source of a fire or explosion. Lithium-ion is one of the most successful battery chemistries ever introduced with billions of cells being produced every year, with estimated annual revenue at well over $35B. Additionally, rapid growth is forecasted in coming years as lithium-ion batteries become even more pervasive in many applications, including consumer electronics, electric vehicles and energy storage. However, as volumes grow and companies push the boundaries of lithium-ion battery technology, there have been an increasing number of battery fires and explosions which, in some cases, have resulted in billions of dollars of damages. While manufacturers use various techniques to improve safety, these existing techniques often reduce performance and/or increase cost and do not guarantee safety from overcharge, internal short or certain high temperature environments. Amionx Safe Core can prevent batteries from becoming the source of costly damages resulting from these issues.

08:42 EDT Schlumberger recommends stockholders reject offer by TRC Capital - Schlumberger has been notified of an unsolicited "mini-tender" offer by TRC Capital Corporation to purchase up to 2M shares of Schlumberger common stock, representing approximately 0.14% of Schlumberger's shares of common stock outstanding. TRC Capital's offer price of $65.63 per share is approximately 4.3% below the closing price per share of Schlumberger's common stock on June 16, the last trading day before the commencement of TRC Capital's offer. Schlumberger does not endorse TRC Capital's unsolicited mini-tender offer and is not associated in any way with TRC Capital, its mini-tender offer, or its mini-tender offer documents. Because TRC Capital's offer price is at a price below the current market price for Schlumberger's common stock, Schlumberger recommends that stockholders reject this unsolicited offer or, if stockholders have already tendered shares, that they withdraw their shares by providing the written notice described in the TRC Capital mini-tender offer documents prior to the expiration of the offer, currently scheduled for 12:01 a.m., New York City time, on Wednesday, July 19. TRC Capital's mini-tender offer seeks less than 5% of Schlumberger's outstanding common stock, thereby avoiding many disclosure requirements and procedural protections of the SEC. The SEC has cautioned investors that some bidders make mini-tender offers at below-market prices "hoping that they will catch investors off guard if the investors do not compare the offer price to the current market price." 06:05 EDT Cenovus Energy plans to double production from Deep Basin assets by 2021 - The integration of Cenovus's (CVE) newly acquired short-cycle, high-return-potential Deep Basin assets in Alberta and British Columbia is proceeding well. The company plans to double production from those assets to an average of 240,000 BOE/d in 2021 and has identified approximately 1,500 net drilling opportunities in the Deep Basin that have the potential to generate strong returns. Cenovus expects to increase production at its best-in-class oil sands operations to more than 440,000 barrels per day over the next five years, including the addition of 50,000 bbls/d of production capacity at Christina Lake phase G, which is expected to start producing in 2019. The company also has the option to add an additional 40,000 bbls/d of capacity at Foster Creek and 65,000 bbls/d through its proposed Narrows Lake phase A project. Decisions about those expansions will be considered once Cenovus's planned asset sales are complete and the balance sheet is deleveraged. Cenovus plans to undertake a more robust approach to its hedging strategy in the near-term to help maintain financial resilience while the asset sale process is underway. While the underlying strategy of using hedging to help manage targeted cash outflows remains unchanged, the company now has approval from its Board of Directors to hedge up to 75% of forecast crude oil volumes this year and in 2018. This is up from 50% prior to the acquisition. As of June 15, 2017, the company had hedges in place on approximately 143,000 bbls/d of crude oil for the remainder of this year at an average floor price of about US$51.50/bbl and 50,000 bbls/d of crude oil hedged for the first half of 2018 with an average floor price of approximately US$49.70/bbl. The company completed its acquisition of assets in Alberta and British Columbia from ConocoPhillips (COP) on May 17. The transaction included ConocoPhillips' 50% interest in the FCCL Partnership, which was the companies' jointly owned oil sands venture, as well as the Deep Basin assets and doubled Cenovus's current crude oil and natural gas production and reserves base.

The company's annual Current Market Outlook, or CMO, was released today at the Paris Air Show, with total airplane demand rising 3.6 percent over last year's forecast. "Passenger traffic has been very strong so far this year, and we expect to see it grow 4.7 percent each year over the next two decades," said Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "The market is especially hungry for single-aisle airplanes as more people start traveling by air." The single-aisle segment will see the most growth over the forecast, fueled by low-cost carriers and emerging markets. 29,530 new airplanes will be needed in this segment, an increase of almost 5 percent over last year. The forecast for the widebody segment includes 9,130 airplanes, with a large wave of potential replacement demand beginning early in the next decade. With more airlines shifting to small and medium/large widebody airplanes like the 787 and 777X, the primary demand for very large airplanes going forward will be in the cargo market. Boeing projects the need for 920 new production widebody freighters over the forecast period. The Asia market, including China, will continue to lead the way in total airplane deliveries over the next two decades. Worldwide, 57 percent of the new deliveries will be for airline growth, while 43 percent will be for replacement of older airplanes with new, more fuel efficient jets.
